Chaucers Models of Authorship and his Anxiety Essay Chaucers Models of Authorship and his Anxiety of Influence in the Prologue to the Legend of Good Women.  There is no doubt that Sir Geoffrey Chaucer placed immense value upon the integrity and accuracy of his work. This is clearly evident in the poem, Chaucers Wordes Unto Adam, his Owne Scriveyn, where he reprimands his scribe Adam for his negligence and over zealousness in copying texts he has given him. But after my makyng thow wryte more trewe, So ofte adaye I mot thy werk renewe,  It to correct and eke to rubbe and scrape,  And al is thorugh thy negligence and rape. (Chaucer, Adam 4-7)  It is a short, yet passionate poem as it succinctly illustrates the intense ferocity Chaucer felt toward Adam for altering his creations; as demonstrated when he calls down a plague upon poor Adams head! Chaucers preoccupation with the transmission of texts that are of quality and trewe spills over into another of his works, prologue to Legend of Good Women [G Text], in which he examines the whole concept of his responsibility as an author in a more holistic fashion. This essay seeks to discuss how Chaucer felt about his accountability as an author, translator and mediator of texts and the influences that fashioned his subjectivity as a writer. It also seeks to explore the anxiety that Chaucer displays in the prologue as to his justification as an author and his realisation of the influence that his subjectivity would have in the future on his readership. It is clear that about the time Chaucer commenced to write the prologue to the Legend of Good Women, that he was beginning to feel very self-aware of his impact upon his readers and his responsibility as an author. In a time when illiteracy rates were high and his works were scantly distributed among a privileged coterie, Chaucer began to awaken to his accountability to adequately transmit the truth of a text. Chaucer saw himself as the saviour of these tales, which only for his penning would be lost to the world forever. And if that olde bokes were aweye/ Yloren were of rememberance the keye (LGW 25-26). A most interesting metaphor that he uses to convey this in the prologue is the image of himself as the reaper of left over ears of corn thereby salvaging the tales and legends of old by committing them to the written word. For wel I wot that folk han here-beforn  Of makyng ropen, and lad awey the corn;  And I come after, glenynge here and there,  And am ful glad if I may fynde an ere  Of any goodly word that they han left (LGW 61-65).  Chaucer saw himself as undertaking the labour of collecting, recording and translating these stories, at times even reconstituting them using his own discretion As of the lef again the flour to make (LGW 71-72). Chaucers labour of love was to remember these stories and in doing so form a bedrock upon which to establish English as a literary language his flowers will become the bread upon which English literature will be sustained. It is also interesting to note that Chaucer uses a specific flower as the metaphor for his works the daisy. This is a simple, humble, unpretentious flower perhaps a metaphor for the English vernacular: numerous but unadorned. Chaucer blatantly announced in the prologue, his ultimate objective in the compilation of these tales was, The naked text in English to declare (LGW 86). Using the English vernacular, over French and Latin, Chaucer wanted to establish the artistic integrity of the English language and he did this with fabulous success. Less than a century later, Thomas Hoccleve canonised Chaucer as a literary progenitor, as a quasi-religious icon, as a model of authoritative advice, and as the founder of a national poetic tradition (Perkins, 103), in the im mortal lines: My deere maistir, God his soule qwyte, And fadir, Chaucer, fayn wolde han me taght,  But I was dul and lerned lyte or naght. (Hoccleve, 2077-2079)  It is possible that Chaucer projected that his name would be draped with the mantle of a title so weighted with reverence and respect as the father and creator of a literary tradition and it is evident a certain anxiety about his role as the author is manifested in the prologue to Legend. It is unusual that a 14th century author would be concerned about his bearing over a text as this view to the writing and development of an authors work is commonly associated with the Modernist approach to literary theory which was first brought into vogue during the 20th century. In practical terms, Chaucer understood that in each text he wrote, there was a part of him in it it was subjective. Chaucer was the vital and central ingredient to the flower that he had reconstructed. In the prologue Chaucer thoroughly considered his credibility as an author and translator of these stories, contemplating the influences and modes of authorship, which had constructed and influenced his own style.

Sister Flowers

I believe that the use of grammar is an important part of this passage. It is one of the points that Angelou's character, Marguerite, uses to define the social split in her life. Marguerite uses many different examples to separate what makes Sister Flowers so different and special compared to herself and her own life. Marguerite has respect for Sister Flowers for a number of reasons: the way Sister Flowers speaks and uses her grammar, the way she dresses, the way she carries herself, her body shape and even the richness of her skin.Marguerite is pretty embarrassed for her and her grandmother's sake and in my opinion it shows how much Marguerite would like her grandmother to be more like Sister Flowers. She even goes as far as to say that she â€Å"hated her [grandmother] for showing her ignorance. † This helped me to understand how highly Marguerite regarded Sister Flowers and how much Marguerite would like to be like Sister Flowers. Mrs. Flowers has a little talk with Marguer ite and tells her, basically, that lack of education does not mean a person isn’t intelligent. She said that I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy.That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and even more intelligent than college professors. She encouraged me to listen carefully to what country people called mother wit. That is those homely sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations. Education separates people, but something more important unites them – self-respect and respect for one another. Just because Marguerites grandmother intelligence is passed from one generation to another, it shouldn’t go on unnoticed because she can also learn something from it.

Analysis of “Can-can” by Arturo Vivante

The story under the title â€Å"Can-can† was written by Arturo Vivante. Born in Rome in 1923, Arturo Vivante graduated in 1949 and practiced medicine in Rome until 1958 when he ended his medical career and moved to America to pursue a career as a professional writer. Vivante has since been on the faculty of several American universities and is now retired and living in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Though Vivante writes in English and has lived in America for much of the last 35 years, his Italian heritage has an undeniable presence in his fiction.His short stories often read like reflections or memories of a distant and foreign past that a reader of Vivante cannot help but link to the life of the transplanted author himself. The plot of the story under the discussion is quite interesting and I dare say close to our reality. A man is going to the secret meeting with the other woman, leaving his house, wife and children. Suddenly it occurs to him that he wants to stay, but the date is already arranged.So, having arrived to the summer cottage he finds himself thinking of his wife and that surprises him greatly. The problem raised by the author is quite clear: the husband intends to have a love affair and is already unfaithful to his wife. Professional Development Plan Essay Example Professional Development Plan Essay Professional Development Plan Essay Professional Development Plan The group members of Learning Team A took a DISC assessment to determine their personality types, strengths and weaknesses, and areas needing improvement. The members of the group are (your name). The Professional Development Plan will describe the strengths and weaknesses of each personality type, characteristics each type share and characteristics that could cause conflict, and how each type can work together. Along with showing how I the manager can better my ability to lead the team. The DISC assessment generated three personality types within the group: Interactive, Cautious, and Dominance. Three members of the group that include myself are labeled as Interactive. The Interactive strengths include enthusiasm, good people skills, optimists, persuasive, and charming. They do have some weaknesses that are Just wanting to have fun, would rather have lunch with the client than be in the office, disorganized, and have poor-follow through. The member who was labeled Cautious their strengths are independent, dependable, good at follow-through, good isteners, but ask many questions, over critical, want perfection, uncomfortable around Interactive personalities, and work at a slow pace, which are all weaknesses. Last is the Dominance personality type they are goal-oriented, take authority, fast- paced, and willing to challenge outdated thinking and ideas. Their weaknesses are what make them different from the other two personality types. They are not afraid to bend the rules, become annoyed with delays, and they fgure it is easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. Of the three types the Interactive personality is someone that is more of a people person and not so much business-oriented that is quite different from the Dominance and Cautious type. For each group member to work together as a team. They will first have to understand their strengths and weaknesses and use them as a tool for the group to achieve their goal. The Dominance and Cautious types have more in common than not. They are both productive, problem solving, efficient, independent, and have the same irritations. The only issue between these two types is the pace. The Cautious type prefers a slow pace where the Dominance type prefers a face pace Just like the Interactive type, but they tend to be more spontaneous, unlike Dominance and Cautious types were they are more decisive and want perfection. Dominance and Interactive types have only one thing in common, high energy. What they do not have in common is pace, goals, fears, motivators and irritations. There are no common characteristics between Interactive and Cautious types only Cautious types are uncomfortable with Interactive types. There are many characteristics that could cause issues between the two types that are organization, focus, and motivators. After understanding each personality type, the characteristics of each and what each have in common. The group members now need to utilize each of their own characteristics and use them as a tool to accomplish their goals. For example, if this group was working for a car dealership. I would suggest the Interactive types to be salesmen. They are good with people, and enthusiastic that is definitely needed for selling a car. They enjoy opportunities to talk and a major goal for them is to be recognized. For the Cautious types I would put them in a Human Resources position or maybe in the Accounting department. Those positions need people that posses the following traits: detail oriented, independent workers, and follow-through with their work. For the Dominance type I would see a manager position. They are comfortable in charge, fast paced, and are willing to take challenges head on. All these positions need one another for the dealership to thrive. The DISC assessment labeled me with an Interactive personality and I actually disagree. I tend to have more of a Dominance personality. I want to be in charge, keep things at a fast pace, and tend to get irritated when there is a delay in my projects. I feel a good leader is usually passionate about the organization and his or her work, exudes confidence in his or her abilities, can organizes and makes sense of complex situations, maintains high standards and inspires others to do the same, can motivate and inspire employees, and is generally looked up to as a person of ision (Hill, 2009). This is a quote that I want base my leadership on. I agree with everything it expresses. I feel that I could inspire greatly the members of my group and motivate him or her to accomplish their goals. I look forward to learning more skills about becoming a leader. The DISC assessment has show all the different characteristics of each personality type. There are many traits that each type share and some that could cause some conflict, but without those certain people would not get that push needed to succeed in life. The group members will need to understand ow to rely on one another even if he or she is uncomfortable with that type of personality.
